Flawless - In theaters
Starring Michael Caine, Demi Moore

This is a quiet film with good pacing, strong acting, and nice twists and turns. Set in the 1960s, it doesn’t have the shoot-’em-up, bang-bang feel of many crime dramas, and it doesn’t need it. Demi Moore surprises in a role that showcases her looks and skills, without exploiting either. She plays Laura Quinn, the rare woman executive in the male-dominated diamond industry. Continually passed over for promotions that go to less experienced men, she keeps her head down and (public) spirits high in the hope that things will change and recognition will follow. When Mr. Hobbs, the janitor (played pitch-perfectly by Michael Caine), approaches her with news that she is about to be fired, he offers condolences in the form of a plot to steal a small amount of diamonds, just enough to set them both up for life. Moore’s character initially balks at the idea, but as the glass ceiling pushes down on her and rumors of her incompetence spread, the idea becomes not only plausible, but necessary.

The movie really finds its groove once the heist has taken place. Mr. Hobbs intentions are revealed to be a bit more then he initially let on. One scene in particular was so powerful in its surprise factor that it evoked a loud gasp/laugh from the audience. There are a few scenes (including the actual robbery) that feel forced, but I was willing to let those pass and enjoy the plot’s clever and cohesive twists. I think you will, too.
