Did someone say, party?

What exactly qualifies as a party? According to Merriam-Webster Online, a party (aside from its political definitions) is quite simply “a social gathering.” How about that? A mere three-word explanation for what surely must be one of man’s (probably woman’s) greatest creations. Birthday parties, anniversary parties, cocktail parties, ugly sweater parties, I-finally-quit-my-job parties (which I will happily throw when my good friend “X” does just that), and, of course, the neverending stream of holiday parties stretching from one end of the year to the other.
